Another earthquake this afternoon.

A big, heavy shake at 1: 10 pm. As usual twitter was the first to react, by the time I tweeted ‘tremor’ many others were tweeting. Someone tweeted, “There are 28 tremor tweets in my time line.”

Once again I thought it was one of the dogs 🙂 The cook said glasses were rattling, I felt giddy like many people had done in Delhi, after the Bhuj earthquake on 26 Jan 2000.

This is a screen shot from Galaxy S II.
Epicentre – Bahadurgarh, no wonder NCR shook.

Here it says it was a 5.2, but the TV channels said it was 4.9 on Richter scale. It felt much more than 4.9, didn’t last long (10 seconds I think) – but it was big jolt.

An earthquake. A cloud burst. Another earthquake.

On the 7th of September, only after the Son asked if I had felt an earthquake (11 28 pm) did I realize that the dog absentmindedly assumed to be scratching herself (and shaking the bed), was actually fast asleep. (I just realised, I had blogged about another earthquake on Sept 21 2009, and another one on Sept 16th 2008 – this one was before Twitter.)

There was nothing in the news but as expected Twitter was abuzz with tweets about Tremor and Terror on the same day. Turned out the earthquake that had felt like 6.6 was a less than ‘moderate’ 4.2 on Richter scale and Sona, Haryana was the epicenter. Delhi and NCR had felt the tremors. Many people had heard a rumble too.

I changed the default settings on Earthquake Alert! App on my Samsung Galaxy S II to include tremors more than 2.0 on Richter Scale.

Then on the afternoon of 15th September, there was a rain that was like none I remember seeing before. Strong winds and water pouring down like a thousands of buckets were upturned in the sky. Later the news reports declared that this was probably a cloud burst because it was highly localised.

And now this devastating earthquake in Sikkim today.

16 people have lost their lives and landslides have added to the safety concerns.

“Tremors were felt in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Several buildings developed major cracks in the state as personnel of the Disaster Management were deployed, Sikkim Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso said.” [Link]
