Gurgaon pub attendant gang rape victim: Went willingly? Refused medical test?

Since I wasn’t watching the news on TV, I googled to find out about the news everybody here is talking about.

Poster by Rahmath.

Is this the same case being reported?

1.

A 23-year-old woman working as a guest attendant in a pub at Sahara mall at MG Road, was allegedly gang raped by six unknown assailants in DLF phase-II Area of Gurgaon on Sunday night.

The victim was dragged out by five unknown assailants from a radio taxi cab she had hired from Gurgaon to Badarpur in Delhi and later she was abducted by the assailants in their car. The victim was gangraped in a mansion at DLF Area and later she was dropped at Chattarpur Metro Station at MG Road.

The medical reports of the victim confirmed gang rape. [link]

2.

“It all happened in the wink of an eye. The Maruti car pulled up right in front of my car. I had slowed down as I was taking a U-turn. Five men came out while one remained in the seat. They put a hand on her mouth, dragged her inside the car and sped away in the wrong direction,” said Mehdi Hassan, the cab driver.

A medical examination was conducted on the victim but the police are yet to access the reports. [Link]

And then this report tells something entirely different – The same cab driver? Same name atleast…

3.

Pub attendant ‘raped’ in Gurgaon

Apart from that, Mehendi Hassan, Radio taxi cab driver in his statement to police said: “The victim along with his [her?] cousin hired taxi at around 2:30 am. His cab was overtaken by six unknown youths who were in the Maruti 800 car having registration number HR 266458. They knocked on the door of his cab and they called the girl out. She stepped out of the car on her own and even her cousin did not oppose when she got into the Maruti 800. The investigations has taken a backseat since the records of the registration number of the vehicle was burnt during  a major fire in 1994 at the transport office.” [Link]

And the last one – I found no other link to confirm this report below.

Alleged gang rape victim from Gurgaon refuses medical test

Gurgaon:  A 23-year-old girl who worked at a pub at a Gurgaon mall near Delhi says she was gang-raped last night. The police says the alleged victim was reportedly hired by the pub to engage with male customers.

However, the girl has refused to undergo medical test. [Link]

Edited to add: Does it look like, we don’t take reporting of sexual crimes seriously? There seems to be some difficulty in believing that a rape victim would  actually report the crime. Not surprising I guess, because reporting of rapes is a new phenomenon, traditionally women suffered silently (or took their lives) to save the Indian culture.

Now it is becoming difficult to shame and silence rape victims – not very convenient for rapists and rape-apologists.

There are some inconsistencies in what this rape victim is alleging.

  1. The reports have confused me as well
One report HT says her mother called her on mobile and heard her telling the rapists that they should drop her at chhatar pur metro
    The next report in the same paper says that the driver did not say anything when the brother who was with the victim called her mother and the mother asked him to come to badarpur back { no information if he was asked to come back with the victim or without her }
I was reminded of Ranga – Billa Kaand where the victims brother died at the hands of the rapist ranga – billa . A national Bravery award SANJAY CHOPRA AWARD is given every year in his name to a brave heart on 26th january http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geeta_and_Sanjay_Chopra_kidnapping_case .
I was part of the rally we took out from university against the crime .
I think we all should now do something more constructive to raise our voice .
MAY BE WE CAN ORGANISE A RALLY

    • I read this one too, in a Hindi daily.

  3. and we expect justice here , when no one even knows what is going on.

I dont know what to say, TRUTH is very horrible sometimes, and beleive me this , media cant be trusted what you read is not what it is out there on the street. Majority of the times the true picture is entirely different.

I see it each day, there is a different story to say or tell or hear with each individual, The truth is only what the Girl in question and the guys who were involved know, rest is all what we are trying to make.

IHM you should come here and I will take you for a shift with me, thats when you will know what i mean.

The thing to question is that once the truth comes out all these journalists who have written the story they need to be brought to the book, where did they get their story, how did it differ so much .. the problem is once truth comes out none of these journalists will be questioned and they move on to a different story easy peasy …

  4. Gang rape seems to be becoming a routine these days. We seem to read about one almost every day, these days! Even with conflicting reports, all one can say with surety is what your poster says, ‘If you rape her, you alone are to blame’.

I am really confused with the poster because if one reads it carefully then it means
THAT WOMAN CAN DO ANY THING LIKE WEAR A BIKNI , BE DRUNK , OUT AT MIDNIGHT THEY ARE NEVER BLAMED
ITS ONLY THE MAN WHO IS BEING BLAMED FOR RAPING HER

to me the poster is very negative and needs to condemned and if shared then shared with disgust

    • I didn’t understand … what do you mean? Do you mean women should be blamed for working late at night? Shouldn’t the rapists be condemned? … women are raped day and night, drunk or not drunk, how many women wear bikinis and go out on Indian streets and then get raped? Are women who are raped wearing bikini?

//ITS ONLY THE MAN WHO IS BEING BLAMED FOR RAPING HER// Only the rapist is being blamed – who else should be blamed? This woman was with her brother, she was a mother of a child, a working woman, not wearing a bikini and was not drunk. Still she was raped. Why allow excuses for rape? Rape is a crime and should be unequivocally condemned.

Did you read about how the police responded? They didn’t even chase the car or attempt to get the car stopped at the toll plaza… they also wasted time wondering whether the crime took place in Delhi Police or Gurgaon.

      • i am merely talking about the contents of the poster which is anti woman i feel
there is a lot written their in between the lines
read it again and on careful reading you will find that
the poster says man are blamed and woman go scot free what ever they do

i find the poster repulsive and i thought many a times again and again and came to the desicion that this poster is abusive for woman

    • You read it right. Let me add to it. Even if the woman is roaming nude on the road, that should not be considered an invitation to come and rape her. And in that case too, the man should be blamed if a rape happens.

I understand that you are confused. There are a lot of people out there who get confused by such posters. Let me add to your confusion. If a man is roaming at night in his underpants and four women rape him, who will you blame? Scratching your head?😉

      • “If a man is roaming at night in his underpants and four women rape him, who will you blame?”
If that happens, people would laugh at him and consider him ‘lucky to get laid by four women’. With the exception of gender egalitarian Norway or Sweden, the police would mock him for being such a ‘wimp’ and wouldn’t register a case. As much as it sucks, men getting raped by women is considered hilarious in pretty much every society where men are supposedly ‘gagging to get laid’. Even if the said man is a 9 year old getting sexually abused by his female teenage cousins; even if the act leaves him with a lifelong scar and battle with depression.

I agree with the rest of your comment however. If a man rapes a woman, no matter what is the supposed morality or condition of the victim, the man is all to blame. There is no social entitlement that a woman has to slake a man’s lust just because she ‘provoked’ it.

    • Thanks for sharing!! Here’s more,
//But had the Gurgaon police acted swiftly on the complaint of the victim’s 15-yearold brother, the gruesome incident could have been averted. After the kidnappers forcibly stopped the hired cab and dragged the victim out, the cabbie and the victim’s brother approached a PCR van parked near Sahara Mall. But when a polic e officer called the victim on her mobile phone, one of the accused snatched her phone and politely told the cops they were dropping her home. And shockingly, the police did not act.

DCP (crime) Maheswar Dayal admitted on Tuesday that the victim’s brother had approached the police. And after the cops on patrol shrugged off the teenager’s pleas, he made frenzied calls home. The incident raised serious questions on the effectiveness of police patrolling and setting up road barricades , particularly on MG Road. //

  7. Here is one of those ToI comments that make me jump for joy:

“Let there be ban on girl’s education after secondary stage. Early marriages should be encouraged. All women should wear veil or modest dress that will protect them from glare of lusty men. Let women be debarred from working and confined to house where they can do productive work. By reading all the above one may mistake me to be a Muslim but I am not. “
